Project description

The EQUALS Badge is an initiative by the ITU Academy, offering girls and young women free access to a top-tier, globally recognized digital skills training and certification program through its e-learning platform.

I was involved in this project from end-to-end, beginning with UX research where we led client workshops to define personas and potential platform features. This was followed by wireframing, user interviews, user testing, and continued through to the final design phase.

The primary objective was to create an accessible e-learning platform that empowers users. To enhance engagement, a playful, gamified approach was incorporated, making the learning experience both enjoyable and inclusive.

An e-learning platform to offer girls and young women access, free of charge, universally recognised digital skills training and certification program.

System flow

A preliminary system flow was developed to establish a foundation for subsequent stages. This initial flow was designed to be open and adaptable, with the understanding that it would evolve in complexity as our understanding of the platform deepened.

UX research and workshops

After mapping and analysing the foundational structure of the EQUALS e-learning platform, we conducted a series of workshops with both clients and users. In the initial phase, we defined a set of key personas and identified core platform features and user expectations. This informed the preliminary design concepts for the future platform.

Wireframes

Leveraging the valuable insights from both users and clients, we identified key needs, pain points, and objectives. These findings provided a solid foundation for developing wireframes and defining critical user flows for the platform.

User Testing & Design

After finalizing a comprehensive set of wireframes, we presented them to the target audience—users who navigated through our prototypes, providing invaluable feedback.

With the wireframes consolidated, we proceeded to the design phase, incorporating gamification elements and introducing a fresh visual language, including a set of bespoke illustrations, a dedicated colour palette and some other structural components. Throughout this process, we ensured responsiveness across all devices.

Illustrations, Badges and Patterns

A standout feature of the platform was the set of illustrations by Radhita Jain. These playful designs helped bring each course section to life, making the experience both engaging and fun. Some of these elements were also creatively used to design background patterns, adding a consistent and cohesive visual touch across the platform.
